Senior Spotlight: Sarah Tolerico

Our next Senior Spotlight for the Carbondale Area Class of 2021 is Sarah Tolerico. Sarah is the daughter of Mike and Sue Tolerico.  Sarah has been a multisport athlete throughout her high school years excelling in soccer, basketball, and track & field.

In her soccer career, Sarah played as a forward and defensive midfielder each fall for the soccer team and was recognized as a First Team Lackawanna League All-Star for the division as a forward in her junior year. She joined the Carbondale Area Girls Varsity Soccer team as an incoming freshman. Her aggressiveness on the field earned her a starting defender position. Sarah played a key role in the Defender position, fearlessly blocking the opposing team’s shots on the CA goal. In her last soccer season, Sarah was persistent in her efforts to demonstrate her talent in other positions and moved into the midfield and forward positions late in the season of her junior year. Sarah knew moving into this position that her team needed her to score- and she finished the year by contributing to 42% of the team’s goals. Sarah averaged 5 shots on goal per game, proving her offensive soccer skills.

In basketball, she is a forward and averaged 11.4 points per game in her junior year. She was selected to the all-tournament team for the Lou Camoni Memorial basketball tournament in her sophomore and junior years and was named to the Hawley Rotary basketball all-tournament team as a junior.  Sarah also competes in javelin, shot put, and discus in the spring months for the track and field team.  She has qualified and competed at districts during her freshman and sophomore years for the javelin.

Sarah has excelled academically, too.  She is currently ranked third in the senior class and has been on the High Honor Roll and has achieved Academic Honors every year of high school.  She is also the National Honor Society Secretary for this school year.

Sarah is also a member of many other clubs including Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), where she was a three-time state qualifier and Vice President. She also serves as Student Council Secretary. Additionally, she is a member of the Spanish club, Yearbook committee, Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD), Prom committee, and Library club. Sarah is employed as a lifeguard at the Carbondale YMCA and is a volunteer for Rails to Trails and VNA Hospice.

Sarah’s favorite subject is Math.  Her favorite memory is the dinosaur talks in Mr. Perri’s English class and her interests include sports, video games, shopping, and hanging out with friends. Sarah plans to attend Penn State – University Park campus in the fall to pursue a degree in Chemical Engineering.

The Carbondale Area School District congratulates Sarah on her achievements thus far and wishes her the best of luck in her future endeavors.

“If you believe in yourself, with a tiny bit of magic, all your dreams can come true.” – Sarah Tolerico, Carbondale Area Class of 2021
